Etymology
Anunobi is derived from the Igbo words: Aṅụna (to not gloat) + na (in) + obi (heart). This conveys the idea that one shouldn't gloat silently over others' circumstances.
Cultural context
There is a saying which appears to have arisen from colonial times: "Onye aṅụna nga ma oyibo anaghị" which is roughly translates as "none should taunt the prison if the white man hasn't left".
